“Honestly, I’d be cautious about relying on them for leak fixes. They’re more about UV protection than true waterproofing.”
I get the hesitation, but I’ve actually seen some of those coatings hold up surprisingly well against minor leaks—at least for a season or two. That said, if water’s already getting in, you’re probably just masking a bigger issue. Temporary band-aid at best. I’d trust a properly secured tarp over a cheap coating any day, especially after a storm.
Tarp definitely worked for me when a branch punched through my roof last fall—just had to make sure it was really tight and weighted down, or the wind would start peeling it up. It’s not pretty, but it kept things dry until I could get someone out. Has anyone tried those “peel and stick” roof patches? Wondering if those are any better for short-term fixes, or just another gimmick.

I tried those peel and stick patches on my shed roof last summer—honestly, they were just okay. They stuck for a bit but started curling up after a couple weeks, especially once the sun hit them hard. Tarp was ugly but did the job better for me. Maybe those patches work better on smaller cracks? Not sure I’d trust them for anything bigger than a nail hole.
