I've been noticing some water stains on my ceiling lately, and I'm trying to figure out if they're from an old leak that was fixed ages ago or if it's something new I should worry about. I don't wanna call a plumber and spend money unnecessarily, you know? Is there a simple way to tell if a leak is recent or just leftover damage from before? Maybe some trick or sign I should look for?

Had something similar happen last year - noticed a stain, thought it was old damage from when we fixed the roof a couple years back. But then I marked the edges lightly with pencil (barely noticeable) and checked after a heavy rain. Sure enough, it expanded slightly, meaning it was fresh. Might be worth trying that trick before calling anyone out... could save you some cash if it's nothing new.
