Tarping’s better than nothing, but yeah, it’s not magic. I’ve seen folks try to stretch a tarp over a low-slope roof and expect it to hold up for months—usually ends with water sneaking in somewhere. Even the thickest tarps break down fast in sun and wind. If you’re in a spot with wild weather swings, those “temporary” fixes can turn into a headache real quick. Honestly, if you ever get the chance to look into green or living roofs, they handle hail and runoff way better long-term... but that’s a whole other project.

Green roofs sound cool and all, but has anyone actually tried installing one on an older house? I feel like it’d be a nightmare with all the extra weight and waterproofing. For tarps, I’ve seen them last a couple months if you double up and use furring strips... not pretty, but it kept my uncle’s garage dry through a rough spring. Maybe it’s just luck?
