RE: Switching from RO to UF membranes made my life way easier
Funny you mention tea - my wife swears her morning cup tasted “off” when we had the RO hooked up. I thought it was just in her head, but after a while, I noticed it too. Kind of bland, like you said. Switched to UF and y...
RE: What would you do if your flat roof kept leaking but you couldn’t find the source?
Flat roofs really do have a mind of their own when it comes to leaks. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve chased water across a ceiling, only to find the actual entry point nowhere near where the drip was showing up. ...
RE: how much does fixing up after a big storm usually set you back?
That’s the part that gets folks every time. I’ve patched up roofs after storms where the owner thought insurance would handle it all, but there’s always some “not covered” surprise. Had a job last spring - wind tore off ...
RE: how much does fixing up after a big storm usually set you back?
I get where you’re coming from - $1,200 just for temp fixes sounds steep, but honestly, after a bad storm, prices on tarps and plywood go up fast. I’ve seen folks spend more if they wait too long. As for the “before” pic...
RE: Confused about insurance deductibles for storm damage
Calling missing shingles “cosmetic” always cracks me up - seen too many “minor” patches turn into major headaches. Had a job last fall, 18-year-old roof, adjuster wanted to patch three spots after hail. Fast forward six ...
RE: Finally got my attic temps under control - here's what worked
I've worked with both cellulose and fiberglass over the years, and honestly, fiberglass batts aren't as finicky as people make them out to be. Sure, gaps can be an issue, but if you're careful during installation, they'r...
RE: Best ways to protect home from extreme weather combo?
You're spot on about roof reinforcement - seen it firsthand. Last big storm, a client of mine had impact windows but skipped the roof straps and attic bracing. Windows held up fine, but the wind peeled back half his shin...
RE: is it just me or are roofs wearing out faster these days?
Exactly this. Reminds me of a job I did a few years back - homeowner insisted on top-tier shingles, but their attic was basically sealed shut. Tried explaining the ventilation issue, but they weren't convinced until thei...
RE: finally found an underlayment that lasts - what's your experience?
Yeah, green roofs can definitely be more trouble than they're worth sometimes. Had a client a few years back who insisted on one - looked amazing at first, but after the first big storm, drainage issues popped up. Ended ...
RE: how hot is too hot when welding TPO roofing?
I've found that giving the seam a gentle tug or poke with a flat screwdriver can tell you a lot. If it peels up easily, you've got issues. Learned that one the hard way after a storm... ever tried something similar?
RE: Rusty nails ruining my weekend project
I've done a lot of roofing and outdoor projects, and honestly, even the pricier galvanized nails can disappoint you sometimes. Had a job about five years ago where we went all out - bought what we thought were top-qualit...
RE: Best ways to insulate a modified bitumen roof?
Had a similar experience myself a few years back. We tried spray foam on a modified bitumen roof for a commercial job, and honestly, it was more trouble than it was worth. The foam itself wasn't the issue - it was the ti...
