RE: How should I evaluate a “miscellaneous roof repairs” allowance?
The “unused allowance is credited back” wording is useful, but it only produces a fair comparison if the allowances cover the same scope. A $1,500 allowance may look lower simply because another contractor has already in...
RE: just read about roof issues popping up after winter - are you checking yours?
I get what you mean about “boring” being underrated. I’ve got a 30-year-old asphalt shingle roof - nothing fancy at all, but it’s held up through some wild Midwest storms. I did look into those spray-on coatings and supe...
RE: When hail meets metal: a suburban legend
You’re not alone in feeling like there’s no perfect answer when it comes to gutter guards, especially in areas that get wild weather swings. I’ve cycled through a few types myself - foam, plastic, stainless mesh - and ev...
RE: Would you worry about lightning if your house had a metal roof?
I had a similar concern about drainage when I put in my green roof trays. We get some pretty intense downpours here, and while the built-in channels help, I still had to add an extra drain after the first big storm. Like...
RE: When sparks fly: imagining a wildfire-proof neighborhood
You’re spot on about debris - honestly, I think a lot of folks don’t realize just how fast it piles up, especially if you’ve got overhanging trees. I’m in the Pacific Northwest, so moss and pine needles are basically a w...
RE: Update Roof Ventilation ?
Yeah, I put in baffles before adding more insulation - wouldn’t skip that step, especially in a humid spot. Attic definitely felt less oven-like after, and the musty smell faded too. Ridge vents have been working fine fo...
RE: finally found a roofing company that didn't rip me off
Moisture meters are useful, but honestly I've found thermal imaging cameras more reliable for tricky leaks. Moisture meters sometimes give false positives if there's metal or wiring nearby... thermal imaging can pinpoint...
RE: Best ways to protect home from extreme weather combo?
Gutter guards are definitely helpful, but I'd argue that proper attic insulation and ventilation might actually be more critical for extreme weather protection. Last winter, despite having gutter guards installed, ice da...
RE: how hot is too hot when welding TPO roofing?
That's a really good question about the ideal temperature range. When we did our TPO roof last summer, I remember our installer mentioning something similar. He was pretty meticulous too - kept using an infrared thermome...
RE: Eco-friendly roof upgrades that won't break the bank
Totally agree about drainage being key - learned that the hard way myself. When I first installed rain barrels, I underestimated overflow management... ended up with a mini swamp near my foundation after a big storm. Not...
RE: Roof checkups saved me big bucks - anyone else?
That's a really important example you shared - thanks for bringing it up. I've noticed many DIYers underestimate how much extra weight a green roof or even solar panels can add, especially after heavy rain or snow. When ...
RE: Found a mysterious metal roof sample... now what?
That's an interesting point - I hadn't considered urethane-based primers before. Do you think they'd also perform well on galvanized metal surfaces, or would adhesion be an issue there?
