Getting attic airflow right: my step-by-step for better roof health
- Powered attic fans…yeah, I’ve been burned by those before. Thought I was helping with summer heat, but turns out they just sucked conditioned air straight from the house (drafty old place, go figure). Electric bill went up, not down. Lesson learned.
- Baffles are weirdly underrated. First time I ever poked around my attic, there were maybe two half-crushed ones left from who-knows-when. Airflow? Not so much. Ended up spending a Saturday crawling around - fiberglass in my sleeves, cursing whoever invented blown-in insulation - to get those things set up right. Worth it for the peace of mind.
- Bathroom vents dumping into the attic is wild to me. Saw it at a buddy’s place once: winter hits, and suddenly he’s got icicles hanging off his roof sheathing. Mold city. Fixed it with a proper vent to the outside and some new ducting - wasn’t even that expensive.
- Not sure I’d say powered fans are *always* bad. If your attic is sealed up tight and you’re in a super humid spot, maybe they help? For most people though, seems like more trouble than they’re worth.
- My own “roof health” checklist looks something like:
- Make sure soffit vents aren’t blocked (spiderwebs, insulation, random bird nests…)
- Check for daylight at the ridge vent
- Confirm baffles are actually in place and not just a suggestion
- Seal up any obvious air leaks before adding more insulation
- Living in the Midwest means wild temp swings - ice dams in winter, roasting attics in summer. Getting that airflow right made a bigger difference than anything else I’ve tried.
- If you ever want to know what itchy feels like, try crawling through cellulose without a mask. Wouldn’t recommend.
Anyway…agree with pretty much everything here. Attic work is sweaty and awkward but skipping it just leads to bigger headaches later on.
