RE: Getting attic airflow right: my step-by-step for better roof health
- Powered attic fans…yeah, I’ve been burned by those before. Thought I was helping with summer heat, but turns out they just sucked conditioned air straight from the house (drafty old place, go figure). Electric bill wen...
RE: Feeling good about my switch to composite tiles - worth it?
- Same here - color faded a bit faster than I hoped, but honestly, not having to drag out the ladder every time it storms is worth it. - I went with a darker brown, and yeah, the fading’s more obvious than I thought it’d...
RE: Clearing roof mess: DIY or hire a pro?
- Been there with the “handful of shingle grit.” It’s wild how fast you can wear those down without meaning to. - That’s pretty much my experience too. Unless you’re paying for a deep clean, the results aren’t always ...
RE: finally found an underlayment that lasts - what's your experience?
- Gotta say, I’ve had the opposite experience with the recycled stuff. Used a recycled-fiber underlayment on my garage roof (also Midwest), and it held up fine through two winters so far. - Maybe it’s a brand thing? Or...
RE: LOOKING FOR GOOD PLACES TO BUY METAL ROOFING SHEETS
- Totally agree on the local shop thing. I tried the big box route once - ended up with three panels that looked like they’d been dropped off a truck, and nobody at the counter cared. - Waiting for a new shipment is a ...
RE: Lowered my insurance bill after a roof inspection - anyone else surprised?
- Had a similar thing happen last spring - missed a tiny shingle lift near the gutter. - Thought it was nothing, but after a couple storms, water started dripping into the attic. - Ended up costing way more than if I...
RE: Just got a roof inspection PDF that's straight outta sci-fi
- Had the same glare issue last year, pics looked like a kaleidoscope. - Still, beats climbing up there myself... heights aren't my thing. - Good catch on those shingles, better safe than sorry.
RE: Roofing near the ocean - did you know salt air eats metal?
Yeah, the greenish look isn't for me either. Marine-grade aluminum is solid advice though - used it on my deck railing and it's holding up great. Coastal living means constant trial and error... hang in there.
RE: insurance fine print strikes again - what would you do?
- Had a similar issue a couple years back. - Adjuster kept calling obvious storm damage "wear and tear"... - Got my roofer to write a quick letter backing me up, magically changed their tune. - Annoying hoops, but it's t...
RE: Rusty nails ruining my weekend project
- Totally agree on stainless steel screws - haven't had rust issues since switching. - Also, quick tip: pre-drilling holes helps avoid stripping heads, especially with hardwoods. - Learned that the hard way...
RE: best spot for ice barrier under shingles?
- Had similar issues here. Thought standard ice shield was enough until I had water leaking into the attic one winter. Nightmare. - Ended up adding extra barrier about 5 feet past the exterior wall line. Probably overkil...
RE: keeping safe when you're DIY-ing alone
- Good call on the big red switch - got one myself, and it's saved my bacon at least once. - Had a close shave with a circular saw blade kicking back a while ago... learned real quick to respect the tools. - Now I never ...
