I’ve always wondered if powered attic fans are more trouble than they’re worth. I mean, the idea sounds great—just suck out the hot air, right? But after reading up (and sweating through a few Virginia summers), I’m convinced they’re not the magic fix people hope for. My neighbor put one in last year, swore it’d drop his AC bill, but he ended up with weird drafts and his upstairs actually felt warmer. Turns out, his attic floor wasn’t sealed at all, so the fan just pulled cool air straight from his living room. Not exactly what he had in mind.
Honestly, I’d rather crawl around with a caulk gun and some spray foam than risk making things worse. Ridge and soffit vents seem boring, but they just work—at least on my 1970s ranch. Maybe if you’ve got a super funky roof or crazy humidity, it’s different, but for most of us, I think simple is better. Anyone else get tempted by those “set it and forget it” gadgets and end up regretting it?
