That’s been my experience too—metal’s tough, but that sticker shock is real. I’ve heard there are some impact-resistant asphalt shingles now that are supposed to handle hail better, but I’m not sure how well they actually hold up long-term. Has anyone tried those or seen them in action after a big storm?

We put on Class 4 impact-resistant shingles about five years ago after a nasty hailstorm wrecked our old roof. They were pricier than standard asphalt, but nowhere near metal costs. After two more storms (golf ball size hail), I only found a couple of minor dents—no leaks or missing shingles. Still, I wonder how they’ll look in another decade. The warranty’s good, but UV and wind can do their own damage over time. If you’re in a high-hail area, they seem like a decent middle ground.

That’s what I keep thinking about too. We just bought our first place last year and the roof’s got regular asphalt shingles—already a few rough patches after a hailstorm this spring. Class 4 sounds like it’s worth the extra upfront cost if you’re in a spot that gets hit often. I’m also curious how they’ll age, though. Sun and wind are no joke around here...
