Been thinking lately about finally getting solar panels installed on our house. Roof's about 7 years old, Malarkey shingles (Legacy line, I think?), and still in great shape. But I've heard mixed things about how well certain roofing materials hold up when you start drilling into them for solar mounts.
Neighbor down the street had some issues with leaks after putting in solar, but they had a different shingle brand and I'm not sure if it was just a bad install job or what. I really don't wanna mess up a perfectly good roof, you know? Plus, warranty stuff makes me nervous—like, would installing solar void anything?
Did some googling and got a bunch of conflicting info. Some folks say Malarkey shingles are pretty solid with solar installs, others say be cautious. Installer I talked to briefly on the phone said "should be fine," but he didn't sound super confident, lol.
So, figured I'd ask here if anyone has experience with this combo. Did your Malarkey shingles handle solar mounts okay? Any leaks or warranty headaches afterward? Or maybe you went another route like ground-mounted panels or something else entirely?
Just wanna hear some real-world experiences before I take the plunge. Thanks in advance!
I manage several properties, and we've had solar installed on a couple roofs with Malarkey Legacy shingles. Honestly, they're pretty durable shingles, and we haven't experienced leaks or warranty issues yet (knock wood...). The key is really the installer—make sure they're certified and use proper flashing methods. I'd recommend getting written confirmation from Malarkey directly about warranty coverage before proceeding, just to be safe.
