Have you tried just softening the water before UF? Curious if that’d help with the scale without all the RO hassle.
I looked into that actually. Softener before UF does cut down on scale, but it’s another thing to maintain and adds salt to the water. For me, RO meant almost zero scale, but it felt like overkill for drinking. UF’s easier, but yeah—kettle gets crusty faster. I just descale monthly now and call it good.
That kettle scale is relentless, right? I hear you on the softener—my last place had one and it was just one more thing to fuss over. Plus, I swear the salt made my coffee taste weird. RO’s great for appliances, but yeah, feels like using a bazooka on a mosquito for drinking water. Monthly descaling isn’t the end of the world... I just treat it like a reminder to clean out the fridge while I’m at it.
