I’ve seen this play out more times than I care to admit—folks get insulation fever after a cold snap, and next thing you know, their attic’s sweating like it just ran a marathon. Had a guy last year who was so proud of his “energy upgrade” until he called me about the weird smell upstairs. Sure enough, insulation stuffed right up against the soffits, not a baffle in sight. We ended up pulling half of it back out just to let the place breathe again.

Honestly, I get why people focus on insulation first—it’s the flashy part, right? But if you don’t give that hot air somewhere to go, you’re basically turning your attic into a sauna. I always tell folks: before you even think about rolling out another batt or dumping in more blown-in, grab a flashlight and check those vents. If you can’t see daylight through your soffits, you’re probably in for some funky surprises come spring.

And hey, if you’re not sure what you’re looking at up there... sometimes it’s worth calling in someone who’s crawled through more attics than they care to remember. Trust me, your nose (and your wallet) will thank you later.
