- Totally agree—once that paint or coating gets dinged, it’s just a matter of time before water sneaks in.
- I’ve seen the same thing with hail, especially on older panels. Even tiny chips can turn into real headaches after a couple seasons.
- In my experience, primers slow rust, but don’t expect miracles. If you catch it early and use a rust converter first, you might buy a few years. But if there’s already pitting, it’s usually just delaying the inevitable.
- Metal tape and sealant work okay for small spots, but I’ve had callbacks where the patch peeled or water got under it.
- Full panel replacement is pricey, but sometimes ends up cheaper than chasing leaks year after year. Depends on how bad the damage is and if you’re dealing with structural rust.
- Insurance adjusters almost always call it “cosmetic,” but they’re not the ones dealing with leaks down the road...
- One thing I’ve started doing is checking for soft spots around dings—if you can press the metal in, it’s probably time for a bigger fix.
- Curious if anyone’s tried those spray-on rubber coatings for hail dings? Seen mixed results, but haven’t used them myself yet.
