RE: Anyone else tried those heated driveway mats?
- Totally get where you’re coming from with the weird driveway angles. Those mats are really only practical on straight, flat runs - any curve or slope and you’re fighting a losing battle with coverage. - I tried piecing...
RE: Which holds up better over time: felt or synthetic underlayment?
- I totally get the sticker shock with synthetic. My first reaction was, “wait, how much per roll?” But after seeing how quickly felt can get soggy here (PNW, so rain is just a way of life), I bit the bullet. No regrets ...
RE: if you had to redo your roof tomorrow, what material would you pick?
- Totally get your point about the ice dams - those were brutal with my old shingles too. - Couldn’t agree more. That alone makes metal worth considering, even with the snow slide headaches. - I had to tweak my landsc...
RE: Roof upkeep through the seasons - did you see this?
- Blocked soffit vents can definitely make your upstairs hotter. The attic acts like an oven if air can’t move through, especially in summer. I had a similar issue - insulation was covering most of my vents, and temps up...
RE: LOOKING FOR GOOD PLACES TO BUY METAL ROOFING SHEETS
- Ran into the same thing when I tried to buy direct - most manufacturers wanted a minimum of 1000 sq ft, sometimes more. - Ended up teaming up with a neighbor to hit the minimum, but it was still a stretch. - Surplu...
RE: Confused about insurance deductibles for storm damage
- Ran into a similar headache last year after a hailstorm tore up my asphalt shingles. Adjuster #1 was super picky - wanted paper receipts for every single repair, even stuff from the previous owner. - I keep a spreads...
RE: Thinking about installing leaf filters - worth the hype or waste of cash?
- Totally get the “just another thing to clean” vibe. I’ve got mesh guards and still end up clearing off the top every fall, just like you said. - Tried foam inserts a couple years back. They *do* keep most leaves out of...
RE: Finally tackled that metal edging thing on my roof
Been down that road myself... stripped screws are like a DIY rite of passage, haha. Pilot holes definitely help, but I've also had luck using an impact driver - makes a huge difference. Keep at it, gets easier each time.
RE: Struggling with installing hip and ridge shingles - any tips?
Been there myself...even the best installs can get humbled by mother nature. Couple quick thoughts: - Make sure you're using longer nails specifically designed for hip and ridge shingles - standard roofing nails sometim...
RE: when do you usually tackle gutter cleaning?
Yeah, mesh guards are decent - installed some last spring. Quick thoughts: - Easier DIY install than metal ones, no sharp edges. - Still gotta brush off leaves occasionally, but way less buildup. - Worth it if you're tir...
RE: Figuring out roof support: choosing between rafters and trusses
Yeah, trusses can be a real buzzkill for DIY skylight dreams... but don't give up completely. Solar tubes might still be doable - less dramatic, but still decent natural light. Worth checking out maybe?
RE: roof vents and the mysterious midnight drip
Totally agree here. Learned the hard way after chasing leaks around my vents with tubes of sealant... felt like playing whack-a-mole on my roof. Switched to proper metal flashing and vent boots last year - no more midnig...
RE: thinking about splurging on better roofing - worth it or nah?
Good points all around. I've done a fair bit of roofing work myself (mostly DIY repairs and helping friends), and here's my two cents: - Solar shingles are definitely cool tech, but they're still pretty niche. That mean...
RE: Finally solved my roof leaks for good (and saved my sanity)
- I've looked into sealed deck systems myself, and while they're great for leaks, I'm not totally convinced about their insulation benefits. From what I've read, the noise reduction during storms isn't significantly bett...
