RE: Best way to lay deck boards on exposed trusses?
I get the appeal of composites, but I’ve always wondered - do they really hold up long-term if you’re in a spot with wild temperature swings? I’ve seen some boards start to cup or fade after a few years. Anyone actually ...
RE: Which holds up better over time: felt or synthetic underlayment?
I get where you’re coming from, but I’m not totally convinced felt is the answer either, especially with these crazy storms we get. I’ve seen felt tear up and blow off way easier than synthetic, and once water gets under...
RE: Which holds up better over time: felt or synthetic underlayment?
That “ice rink” feeling with synthetic is no joke - I’ve nearly lost my footing more than once. I get why folks like it for durability, but honestly, I trust felt way more on steep slopes. You nailed it though, depends o...
RE: How I dodged a payday loan disaster
I hear you on the Ziploc thing - mine melted a bit last July and the papers inside got all wavy. The document sleeve sounds sturdier, but I’m always worried I’ll forget it somewhere. Digital’s great till your battery’s t...
RE: How I dodged a payday loan disaster
Couldn’t agree more - those places are basically legal traps. I’ve seen guys on my crew get stuck in that cycle, and it’s brutal. Honestly, I think more stores should do that layaway thing you mentioned. It’s way better ...
RE: Swapping Out Roof Vent Boots With The Seasons - Worth The Hassle?
Metal vent flashings are definitely tempting, especially after dealing with split rubber boots and those relentless squirrels. I’ve seen a few jobs where folks went all-metal and, honestly, the difference in critter dama...
RE: KEEPING ICY ROOFS IN CHECK: WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO TRICK?
I’ve actually seen that happen - too much airflow and suddenly the bathroom pipes are freezing up in January. It’s like, you want to keep the attic cool, but not turn it into a walk-in freezer. I think it’s all about fin...
RE: Keeping rust at bay when you're near the ocean
WD-40’s a trap near the beach, honestly. I tried it on my old shed hinges and they just turned into sandpaper after a week. As for zinc anodes, I’ve only ever seen them on boats too. Not sure how well they’d work on a ro...
RE: Confused about insurance deductibles for storm damage
Yeah, I hear you on the Xactimate numbers - sometimes it feels like they’re just pulling prices out of thin air. I’ve seen the same thing with code upgrades too. In my experience, unless your policy specifically has “ord...
RE: ROOF SURVIVED HURRICANE, BUT WAS IT JUST LUCK?
I was skeptical about drones at first too, but after seeing one in action during my apprenticeship, I'm coming around. We had a roof that looked totally fine from the ground after a hurricane, but the drone footage showe...
RE: Is it true tile roofs are basically maintenance-free?
Yeah, good points. But honestly, I've noticed tile roofs can be tricky with cracked tiles too - sometimes they're hard to spot until leaks start. Maybe regular checks every year or two wouldn't hurt...?
RE: Trying to budget out a CertainTeed roof - any tips?
Good points on flashing and underlayment, but I'm curious - has anyone had experience with reusing drip edges? I've heard mixed things. A buddy of mine reused his because they looked fine, but ended up regretting it when...
RE: finally found a roofing company that didn't rip me off
That's actually a pretty solid idea. Seen a few drone inspections myself, and they're great for spotting obvious issues quickly. But honestly, nothing beats an experienced inspector getting up there in person - assuming ...
RE: Just got a roof inspection PDF that's straight outta sci-fi
Couldn't agree more on the stabilizers. I've seen a few sketchy moments myself, especially when the ground isn't perfectly level or it's wet from morning dew. Honestly, I wonder why they're not standard equipment by now....
