RE: How do you keep your gutters from turning into leaf soup?
I hear you on the splash guards - seen plenty of those “waterfalls” during a downpour. But have you ever tried those oversized downspouts or even redirecting the valleys with diverter flashing? Sometimes just channeling ...
RE: How do you keep your gutters from turning into leaf soup?
I hear you on the Christmas lights - tried that myself one winter and ended up with a tangled mess and a blown fuse. As for those full-length gutter heaters, I’ve seen them work pretty well in spots with heavy ice, but t...
RE: How Often Do You Really Need to Service Your Stuff?
I totally get the urge to just take a quick glance and call it good, especially if you haven’t had issues before. I’ve seen a lot of folks with newer asphalt roofs figure they’re covered, but then a sneaky little leak sh...
RE: When hail meets metal: a suburban legend
That’s been my experience too - metal roofs are a different beast when it comes to hail. I’ve tried using drones for inspections, thinking I’d save some time, but honestly, the glare and reflections off the panels make i...
RE: Roof checkups saved me big bucks - anyone else?
That’s a good point about moss coming back - have you ever traced it to something weird, like a blocked soffit vent or insulation jammed up in the eaves? I’ve seen folks replace shingles over and over, but the attic’s wh...
RE: Figuring out roof support: choosing between rafters and trusses
Leaks are definitely the bigger headache in my book too. You can have all the ventilation in the world, but if water gets in, you’re still looking at mold and rot - like your neighbor’s plywood roof. I’ve seen both OSB a...
RE: Roof upkeep through the seasons - did you see this?
That attic “science experiment” vibe is too real. I’ve seen some wild icicle formations that looked like something out of a cave tour... Heat cables definitely help in a pinch, but you nailed it - if the insulation’s not...
RE: looking for reliable tile roof brands in the US
Boral’s a solid pick, especially if you’re in a spot that gets hammered by storms or big temperature swings. I’ve seen their concrete tiles hold up after some nasty hail - just a couple chips, nothing major. That said, t...
RE: Just got a roof inspection PDF that's straight outta sci-fi
Drone inspections are great, but they don't always catch subtle stuff like tiny nail pops or hairline cracks in flashing. Had one inspection come back clean, but when the roofer climbed up, he found issues the drone tota...
RE: finally found a roofing company that didn't rip me off
I can see your point about silicone sealants - they're definitely designed for more heavy-duty, long-term outdoor applications. WD-40 on roofing is an interesting idea, but honestly, I wouldn't trust it beyond a quick em...
RE: insurance fine print strikes again - what would you do?
I chatted with my agent about this last year when we were considering a green roof. She said some insurers do offer small discounts, but it really depends on your location and the company's policies. Did your agent menti...
RE: finally found a roofing company that didn't rip me off
I've seen ultrasonic repellents used a few times on projects I've worked on, and honestly, results were pretty mixed. One homeowner swore they saw fewer birds around their roof after installing one, but another client sa...
RE: how much does fixing up after a big storm usually set you back?
Good points about hidden water intrusion - seen that happen way too often myself. Curious though, has anyone found a reliable way to spot subtle moisture issues early on, before they turn into bigger headaches? I've trie...
