RE: Getting attic airflow right: my step-by-step for better roof health
I hear you on the moisture headaches with fiberglass. In my parents’ place, we had batts and it always felt like a losing battle - cold corners, weird damp patches around the can lights, the whole deal. We tried that spr...
RE: What should I consider when choosing top structure shed fabrication services and tarpaulin for industrial or outdoor use?
I get the hype around UV-resistant tarps, but honestly, I’ve had some “UV” ones still shred after a year or two. Maybe it’s our crazy wind more than the sun, but I’m not convinced it’s always worth the higher price tag. ...
RE: Why does cleaning up nail clippings always turn into a scavenger hunt?
I get what you’re saying, but honestly, the plastic bin trick isn’t as much hassle as it sounds. I just clip over an old Tupperware lid and most of the clippings land right on it. Not perfect, but way less crawling aroun...
RE: TOUGHER ROOF OR JUST GOOD ENOUGH? NEED HELP DECIDING
I hear you on the “good enough” thing. I’ve watched a couple jobs where folks went with the cheaper underlayment, and yeah, it looked fine at first. But after a couple of those nasty spring storms, you could see where th...
RE: When sparks fly: imagining a wildfire-proof neighborhood
I get what you mean about those ember vents - sometimes feels like they just swapped one problem for another. Last fall, I spent almost as much time cleaning pine needles off the vent mesh as I did actually clearing the ...
RE: Roof upkeep through the seasons - did you see this?
Those moss sprays are a bit of a mixed bag, at least from what I’ve seen. My uncle tried one last year on his north-facing roof (asphalt shingles, pretty steep pitch, lots of shade from old elms) and it did knock the mos...
RE: Swapping Out Roof Vent Boots With The Seasons - Worth The Hassle?
I’ve tried the heat gun thing on some old shingles and honestly, it’s a mixed bag. If you’re careful and keep it moving, you can get a little flex, but it’s super easy to go too far and end up with a gooey mess or even s...
RE: Thinking about replacing my roof - are shingles really worth it?
Honestly, I’ve seen a lot of metal roofs after hail and yeah, they can look pretty beat up. Most of the time, the dents are just cosmetic - doesn’t really mess with how the roof works. But I get what you mean about shing...
RE: Why does picking between layering new shingles or ripping everything off have to be so confusing?
Yeah, I hear you on the mixed advice. I’ve seen a few jobs where the second layer looked fine at first, but then ice dams hit and suddenly there’s water sneaking in places you can’t see. Midwest winters are no joke. The ...
RE: Is that metal strip on the edge of my roof actually necessary?
I get what you’re saying, but I’ve seen plenty of older roofs around here without drip edge that are still holding up okay. Maybe it’s just luck or the way they were built? Like, yeah, skipping it can cause problems - es...
RE: Roof upkeep through the seasons - did you see this?
Man, I hear you on the never-ending part. Last winter, I thought I was clever adding a solar fan, but all it did was pull cold air through every tiny gap in the attic hatch. Didn’t realize how drafty it was till my bedro...
RE: how long should we honor price quotes?
Man, I’ve seen that play out too many times - someone brings in bargain stuff and then blames us when it goes sideways. I get wanting to save, but roofs aren’t the place to gamble. About the quotes, 30 days feels about r...
RE: When the inspector thinks your house is older than it is
That’s the part that gets me. I get why inspectors list every little thing, but sometimes it just freaks people out for no reason. Ever had an inspector call out “age-related wear” on a roof that’s only like 8 years old?...
RE: Roofing roulette: whose warranty saves the day?
Fair enough, but honestly, I've seen certified installers botch jobs too. Had a neighbor who went with one of those "approved" companies - roof looked great at first, but started having issues within a year. Sure, the wa...
