I've had decent luck with Tamko too, but honestly, both brands still rely heavily on asphalt-based materials. If you're really after longevity and sustainability, might wanna look into metal or composite shingles... pricier upfront, but the durability and energy savings can pay off long-term.

Totally agree with you there—metal and composite shingles are definitely worth considering. We switched to metal roofing about five years ago, and honestly, it's been great. Our energy bills dropped noticeably in the summer, and it's held up perfectly through some pretty nasty storms. Yeah, the upfront cost stung a bit, but knowing we won't have to replace it anytime soon (or ever?) feels pretty good. Plus, it's nice knowing we're reducing waste by not tossing asphalt shingles every 15-20 years...

- Metal roofs are solid for sure, but since OP's already leaning towards asphalt shingles, here's my quick two cents:
- Tamko: decent pricing, easy enough to install, but I've seen them struggle a bit more in hailstorms. If you're in an area prone to hail or heavy wind, you might wanna keep that in mind.
- CertainTeed: generally tougher and hold up better against storm damage in my experience. They cost a bit more upfront, but fewer headaches down the road.
- Also worth noting: warranties can be tricky with both. Tamko's warranty process has been... let's just say "less than fun" for some homeowners I've worked with.
- Bottom line, if storms or wind damage are a concern, I'd lean toward CertainTeed. If you're budget-conscious and storms aren't a big issue, Tamko could do the job just fine.

Had a similar dilemma last year—ended up going CertainTeed after seeing Tamko shingles get pretty beat up in a storm at one of our properties. Curious, anyone had better luck with Tamko's warranty lately?

Had to deal with Tamko's warranty a couple years back, and honestly, it was a bit of a headache. They eventually came through, but it took a lot of back-and-forth and paperwork—felt like I was applying for a mortgage or something, lol. On the flip side, I've inspected plenty of homes with CertainTeed shingles, and they seem to hold up pretty well overall. Not saying Tamko's terrible, but from what I've seen, CertainTeed just seems more consistent in quality and durability.

Funny story though, I once inspected a house where the homeowner swore by Tamko because his neighbor's CertainTeed shingles blew off in a storm while his stayed put. Turns out the neighbor's installer had skimped on nails—so sometimes it's not even the shingles' fault. Moral of the story: whichever brand you pick, make sure your installer knows what they're doing. Good shingles can't fix bad installation...trust me, I've seen it all.
