struggling to decide between Tamko and CertainTeed shingles—anyone have thoughts?

Totally agree on the warranty point. When we redid our roof a few years back, the warranty sounded amazing at first—like peace of mind wrapped up in fine print. But when we had a minor leak after a heavy storm, the warranty hoops we had to jump through were ridiculous. Turns out, it was an installation issue anyway, not the shingles themselves.

We ended up going with CertainTeed based on our installer's recommendation and local feedback, but honestly, from what I've seen around the neighborhood, Tamko roofs seem just as solid if they're installed right. I'd say pick whichever your trusted installer prefers working with—because that's probably the brand they'll do their best work on. Good luck, roofing decisions can be stressful...been there myself!

We had a similar experience with warranties—ours was with CertainTeed, actually. The shingles themselves were fine, but when we had an issue, it turned out the installer had cut corners on flashing around the chimney. Warranty didn't cover that, obviously. Lesson learned: installation quality is everything.

Funny enough, my brother-in-law went with Tamko around the same time, and his roof has held up great through some pretty nasty storms. Honestly, I think both brands are solid if they're installed properly. But since you're already thinking about roofing choices, have you considered looking into any of the newer eco-friendly or reflective shingles? We went that route on our garage addition last year, and it's noticeably cooler in there during summer months. Curious if anyone else has tried those and noticed a difference...

I've managed properties with both Tamko and CertainTeed roofs, and honestly, haven't noticed a huge difference in durability if they're installed right. But I'm not totally sold on reflective shingles—anyone actually seen enough savings to justify the upfront cost?

I've inspected quite a few homes with reflective shingles, and honestly, the savings seem pretty modest. One homeowner showed me their energy bills before and after installation, and while there was a noticeable drop during peak summer months, it wasn't exactly groundbreaking. If you're in a region with intense heat and sun exposure, it might eventually pay off... but otherwise, standard shingles installed properly might be just as effective.
