Did you know synthetic slate can actually be lighter than real stone?

I get what you’re saying about warranties being hit or miss, but has anyone else actually had synthetic slate hold up well long-term? I’ve got a north-facing section that’s still looking pretty sharp after five years. Maybe it’s just the angle and shade, but I’m starting to wonder if some of the fading is more about installation or even attic ventilation than the tile itself. Anyone ever dig into that side of things?

- I’m not convinced it’s just about shade or attic airflow.
- My place faces west, and the synthetic slate faded noticeably after about three years, even though the attic’s vented and insulation’s decent.
- Install crew did everything by the book (or so they claimed), but I still see uneven spots.
- Wonder if some brands just handle UV better than others?
- Wouldn’t rule out a combo of factors, but the material itself seems to matter more than I expected.

I’ve noticed the same thing with synthetic slate—brand seems to make a big difference. My neighbor’s roof faded way faster than mine, and we both get hammered by afternoon sun. I think some of these products just aren’t as UV-resistant as advertised, even if everything else is done right. It’s frustrating when you follow all the install guidelines and still see weird fading or uneven patches. You’re not imagining it; material quality really does matter more than folks let on sometimes.

I hear you on the fading. I went with a cheaper synthetic slate a few years back, thinking I’d save some cash and avoid the weight of real stone. Looked great at first, but now there’s this weird patchiness, especially where the sun hits hardest. My neighbor paid more for a different brand and his still looks new. Sometimes I wonder if saving upfront was worth it...
