I hear you on missing the look of real slate. There’s just something classic about it, but man, the weight is a dealbreaker for a lot of older homes. I’ve actually noticed with some synthetic roofs that they can be quieter, especially during rain—maybe it’s the underlayment or just less resonance? Either way, anything that keeps you off a ladder less often is worth it in my book.
Funny you mention the rain noise—I've inspected a few homes with synthetic slate, and yeah, it's noticeably quieter than the real deal. I chalk it up to the underlayment too, or maybe just less mass to echo around. Real slate looks gorgeous, but I’ve seen rafters bowing under the weight in older houses. Synthetic’s definitely easier on the bones... and the back when you’re up there checking for loose tiles.

That’s true about the weight, but I’m not totally sold on synthetic yet. We had some installed a few years back, and while my back appreciated it, I swear the color faded quicker than I expected. Maybe it’s just our brutal summers here, but real slate ages better—at least visually. Still, not having to reinforce the whole roof structure was a relief.
I hear you on the color fade—synthetic can look a little tired after a few summers, especially if the sun’s relentless. But I’ve seen real slate get pretty patchy too, depending on where it’s quarried. One thing I do like about some of the newer synthetics is they’re actually impact-rated for hail, which is a lifesaver around here. My neighbor’s real slate roof looked amazing until last spring’s hailstorm... now it’s more “abstract art” than “classic charm.”
That hail rating is no joke—my cousin’s house got pelted last year, and their synthetic slate barely had a scratch, while the neighbor’s real slate looked like someone took a hammer to it. I do miss the natural color variation of real stone, but honestly, the weight savings and durability are hard to beat, especially if you’re in a storm-prone area. Color fade bugs me too, but at least you don’t have to worry about cracked tiles every spring...
