Is It Just Me or Do Underlayments Never Last as Long as Promised?

"Thought I'd smoothed everything out perfectly, but missed one tiny wrinkle...fast forward a year, and that spot was already bubbling up."

Yeah, it's surprising how much those tiny imperfections matter in the long run. Underlayment is one of those things that manufacturers always promise will last forever (or close to it), but reality often begs to differ. A few things I've noticed from experience:

- Moisture levels matter big time. Even slight dampness underneath can cause bubbling or warping over time.
- Quality varies hugely—even if they claim similar longevity, cheaper options rarely hold up.
- Installation technique is crucial. Tiny wrinkles or gaps can magnify into bigger issues later.

Curious, did you use a moisture barrier underneath your underlayment? Sometimes people skip it, thinking it's unnecessary, but it really helps with durability.

Honestly, moisture barriers aren't always the magic fix they're cracked up to be. I've inspected plenty of floors where folks did everything "by the book," barrier and all, and still ended up with bubbling. Sometimes it's just luck of the draw...or maybe gremlins, who knows?

I've wondered the same thing—had a property last year where we followed the install guidelines exactly, moisture barrier included, and within months we had bubbling in spots. Makes me question if it's really about the underlayment or if other factors like humidity or subfloor prep play a bigger role...or maybe those gremlins you mentioned aren't just a joke? Either way, seems there's no foolproof method.

Honestly, I think you're onto something here. Had a similar issue a couple years back—did everything by the book, moisture barrier, proper acclimation of materials, you name it. Still ended up with weird bubbling and lifting in spots. Turns out our subfloor wasn't as level as we thought, plus humidity swings were more extreme than anticipated. Maybe those install guidelines underestimate how finicky real-world conditions can be...or maybe those gremlins really are messing with us after all.

- Good points raised here, especially about humidity swings.
- Seen plenty of roofs fail early even with premium underlayments because the attic ventilation wasn't sufficient—traps moisture underneath.
- Also, subfloor or roof deck prep is critical; small imperfections can amplify over time.
- Guidelines are helpful, but they're generic...real-world conditions rarely match lab tests.
- And yeah, those gremlins definitely deserve some blame sometimes...
