I get where you’re coming from about hiring a pro, but I think folks underestimate how much they can do themselves if they’re careful and know what to look for. I’ve inspected a lot of roofs after people have “ruined” them with aggressive cleaning, but honestly, the bigger issue I see is neglect—leaving moss or debris to sit for years because people are scared off by the horror stories. That’s what really shortens shingle life.

If you’ve got a low-slope roof and decent mobility, using a soft brush and a gentle cleaner (like you mentioned) is usually fine, even on older shingles. The key is patience—don’t scrub like you’re cleaning a grill. And yeah, harnesses are non-negotiable. But not every situation needs a pro right out of the gate. Half the time, I see folks call in roofers for stuff that could’ve been handled with a little care and common sense.

Insurance headaches are real, but so is getting charged $800+ for someone to blow leaves off your roof. I’d just say don’t let fear push you straight to the pro route unless there’s actual damage or you’re way out of your comfort zone.

I hear you on the overblown pro vs. DIY debate, but I’d push back a bit—especially after major storms or in areas with older, brittle shingles. Some damage isn’t obvious until you’re up close, and what looks like “just moss” can mask loose tabs or even small punctures. I’ve seen folks try to clean their own roofs and end up voiding warranties or missing subtle hail damage. For routine debris, sure, DIY can work if you know your limits, but after severe weather or if there’s any question about the roof’s integrity, a professional eye really does make a difference. Sometimes that $800 is saving you thousands down the line... just depends on the situation.

Gotta admit, I’m a little skeptical about the “pro eyes only” route every time.

“what looks like ‘just moss’ can mask loose tabs or even small punctures.”
True, but sometimes pros get trigger-happy with the up-sell too. I’ve seen neighbors get quoted for “urgent” repairs that turned out to be just cosmetic.

- Older roofs? Yeah, be careful.
- But if you’re steady on a ladder and know what hail bruising actually looks like (not just every dark spot), you can spot a lot yourself.
- Worst case, snap pics and ask your insurance rep before shelling out $800.

Not saying skip the pros after a tornado, but for a post-storm check, sometimes a cautious DIY walkaround is enough. Just don’t try it in flip-flops...

I get the hesitation about pro up-sells—seen it myself, especially after a bad hailstorm when everyone’s suddenly got “emergency” repairs. But I’ve also watched folks miss stuff that turned into way bigger headaches later. Had a client last spring who thought some missing granules were just cosmetic. By the time he called me, water had already found its way under the felt and into the attic insulation. Not saying you can’t catch obvious damage, but sometimes what looks minor really isn’t. If your roof’s older or you’re not sure what you’re seeing, it’s worth at least getting a second set of eyes—even if it’s just for peace of mind. And yeah, definitely skip the flip-flops... seen that go sideways more than once.

I get where you’re coming from—some of those “emergency” repair pitches are a little much, especially right after a storm when everyone’s nerves are shot. But honestly, I’ve seen way too many folks underestimate what hail or wind can do, especially on older roofs. Even if you’re handy, how do you really know what’s hiding under the surface? Curious if anyone here has actually caught something early on their own, or did it usually take a pro to spot the real problems?
