RE: Clearing roof mess: DIY or hire a pro?
I’ve seen a lot of folks get a little too ambitious with DIY roof cleaning and end up doing more harm than good, but you’re right - if you’re careful, it can work out. I remember one inspection where the homeowner used a...
RE: Anyone else annoyed by how fast roof coatings peel off?
Green roofs look great on paper, but honestly, I’ve seen just as many headaches with those as with coatings - just different ones. Last year I inspected a garage in Minneapolis that had a living roof put in about five ye...
RE: Clearing roof mess: DIY or hire a pro?
I get the hesitation about pro up-sells - seen it myself, especially after a bad hailstorm when everyone’s suddenly got “emergency” repairs. But I’ve also watched folks miss stuff that turned into way bigger headaches la...
RE: Quick fix or redo: dealing with damaged aluminum flashing
That’s the thing with patch jobs - they can surprise you, but sometimes they’re just buying time. I’ve seen aluminum tape hold up for years, then suddenly fail and cause hidden rot behind the fascia. If you’re seeing any...
RE: insurance fine print strikes again - what would you do?
Had a similar headache a couple years back when a client's basement flooded. Insurance kept pointing to some obscure clause about groundwater intrusion. I ended up calling directly, skipped the emails entirely, and walke...

RE: Found a mysterious metal roof sample... now what?
Sedum roofs can be great, but honestly, they're not totally set-it-and-forget-it. Had a client once who was thrilled at first - plants looked amazing, noise was down - but then neglected upkeep. A year later, weeds took ...
RE: Best ways to insulate a modified bitumen roof?
Good call on checking the attic first. Last winter, I inspected a place where the homeowner had condensation dripping from the ceiling - thought it was a roof leak. Turns out, poor insulation and lack of airflow were cau...
RE: Can Your Roof Handle the Weight of a Garden?
I've seen this happen more times than you'd think. People figure soil is just dirt, right? But once you add water, plants, containers... it gets heavy fast. A few years back I inspected a house where the owner proudly sh...
