Maybe some trick or sign I should look for?
Had something similar happen last year—noticed a stain, thought it was old damage from when we fixed the roof a couple years back. But then I marked the edges lightly with pencil (barely noticeable) and checked after a heavy rain. Sure enough, it expanded slightly, meaning it was fresh. Might be worth trying that trick before calling anyone out... could save you some cash if it's nothing new.
