I’ve always been a bit skeptical of those solar fans too. My neighbor put one in after a sales guy convinced him it’d “slash his cooling bill,” but honestly, I didn’t see much difference for him. Meanwhile, I spent a Saturday with a flashlight and a broom just clearing out the soffits and making sure nothing was blocking the vents. Not glamorous work, but my attic temps dropped by almost 10 degrees after that. Didn’t cost me more than some sweat and maybe a few cobwebs in my hair.

I get why folks want to throw gadgets at the problem—seems easier than crawling around up there—but like you said, if the basics aren’t right, you’re just wasting money or even making things worse. I did add baffles where the insulation had shifted (thanks, squirrels), and that alone made a noticeable difference last winter. Less ice on the eaves, and my upstairs felt less stuffy.

Not saying fans are always useless, but for most of us on a budget, getting the passive stuff sorted first is just common sense. If you’re still having issues after that, maybe then it’s worth looking at something extra... but only as a last resort.

I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve actually seen solar fans make a real difference—just not when people skip the basics. My old place had decent passive venting, but the attic still cooked in July (Texas heat is no joke). After adding a solar fan, temps dropped another 8-10 degrees on top of what I got from clearing soffits and adding baffles. Maybe it’s overkill for some climates, but in spots with brutal sun, that extra airflow can help keep shingles from baking and extend roof life. Not saying it’s a magic fix, but I wouldn’t write them off entirely. Sometimes the “gadget” is the missing piece, not just a gimmick.
