is it just me or are roofs wearing out faster these days?

I've noticed the same thing lately. Seems like roofs installed 20-30 years ago just kept going strong, but now I'm seeing shingles curling or losing granules after barely 10 years. Could be manufacturers tweaking formulas to save costs, or maybe installers rushing jobs to keep up with demand? Storm damage claims have definitely gone up in my area, and it's not like the weather's gotten THAT much worse...makes you wonder what's really changed behind the scenes.

I've been noticing the same trend and suspect it's a combination of both factors. Shingle manufacturers have definitely adjusted their asphalt blends over the yearsβ€”often reducing the asphalt content and increasing fillers like limestone, which can lead to premature granule loss. Plus, installation quality has noticeably declined; I've seen roofers skip proper underlayment or ventilation steps just to finish quicker. It's frustrating because these shortcuts significantly reduce lifespan, even if the shingles themselves aren't terrible quality...

I've definitely noticed roofs not lasting as long lately. Had a property reroofed just 8 years ago, and already seeing granule loss and curling edges. When I asked the roofer about it, he shrugged it off as "normal wear," but honestly, it feels like corners were cut somewhere. Like you said:

"I've seen roofers skip proper underlayment or ventilation steps just to finish quicker."

Pretty sure that's exactly what happened in my case... frustrating to say the least.

Yeah, I've definitely seen this happen more often lately. Granule loss after just 8 years isn't really "normal wear," unless you had some crazy storms or something. Usually, issues like curling edges point to ventilation shortcuts or skimping on underlayment. I'd suggest checking your atticβ€”see if there's enough airflow. Roofs need to breathe, otherwise shingles age way faster. Unfortunately, some roofers do rush through these steps...

Totally understandable frustration. Hope you figure it out.

Yeah, definitely noticing roofs don't hold up like they used to. Seems like some manufacturers might be cutting corners with materials lately... plus, improper attic venting is way more common than people realize. Worth double-checking that ventilation setup before blaming the shingles alone.
