- Gotta admit, I've been slacking on gutter checks myself—maybe once every two years, tops. Haven't found anything dramatic yet, though did spot a random tennis ball once... no clue how it got there. Curious though, anyone notice aluminum holding up better long-term?
"did spot a random tennis ball once... no clue how it got there."
Ha, tennis balls are rookie level! Last spring I found a frisbee, half a bird's nest, and a very confused frog. Aluminum definitely holds up pretty well—just don't expect it to repel wildlife.
Found a frisbee once myself, wedged right under the flashing—still no idea how it got there. But a frog? That's a new one for me. Aluminum edging is decent enough, but I've seen raccoons peel it back like it's nothing when they're determined. Makes me wonder if anyone's tried something sturdier, like galvanized steel or copper... might hold up better against wildlife antics.
Galvanized steel is definitely tougher, but copper might be overkill—unless you're going for looks. Honestly, determined raccoons can get through almost anything short of reinforced concrete. I've seen them pry open attic vents like they're opening a snack bag... crafty little critters.
Haha, raccoons are no joke. Last summer, I helped my uncle redo his roof edging with galvanized steel thinking we were safe. Nope. Two nights later, we heard scratching and found one of those furry ninjas halfway through the soffit vent. Ended up reinforcing it with extra screws and mesh. Copper might look fancy, but honestly, unless you're hosting rooftop parties for squirrels, galvanized steel with some extra reinforcements should do the trick... at least for a while.
