how hot is too hot when welding TPO roofing?

- Totally relate to the "abstract masterpiece" comment... been there more times than I'd like to admit.
- Agree on pacing being key; temp alone doesn't tell the whole story.
- Curious if you've noticed differences between brands of membranes? I've found some seem way more forgiving than others when it comes to heat tolerance. Have you had similar experiences?

Definitely seen differences... some membranes just seem to handle heat fluctuations better, others start acting up way too soon. Had a job last summer where one brand practically melted if I paused even a second too long, while another was more forgiving. Makes me wonder about manufacturing processes or material blendsβ€”anyone dug into why certain membranes behave differently under similar conditions?

I've definitely noticed some membranes handle heat differently, but honestly, I've found technique matters way more than brand. Last year, when we redid our garage roof, I was on a tight budget and went with a cheaper TPO membrane. At first, it seemed like it was melting way too fastβ€”thought I'd made a huge mistake. But then I slowed down, adjusted the welding speed, and dialed back the heat just slightly. It took some experimenting, but once I got that sweet spot figured out, even the cheaper stuff welded just fine.

Not saying brand differences aren't realβ€”they definitely areβ€”but sometimes it's more about tweaking your method to match the material you're working with. If you're patient and willing to adjust your settings step-by-step (heat first, then speed), you might find that even budget-friendly membranes can perform surprisingly well. Just my two cents from a DIY perspective...

Yeah, I get what you're saying about technique being key, but honestly, I've seen some cheaper membranes that just won't cooperate no matter how much you baby them. Had a job last summer where the homeowner insisted on supplying his own budget TPO. Man, I swear that stuff had two settings: "not hot enough" and "instant goo." Eventually got it welded okay-ish, but it took twice as long and way more cursing than usual... Technique helps, sure, but sometimes you really do get what you pay for.

- Had a similar headache last year with some off-brand TPO.
- Welded fine at first, then suddenly turned into melted cheese... total nightmare.
- Technique matters, but quality material saves sanity (and time).
