gray TPO seems to go from perfect to cooked in no time

That’s been my experience too. Gray TPO just doesn’t give you the same wiggle room as white, especially if you’re working in direct sun. I’ve had welds look fine one second and then bubble or scorch before I can even react. The color really does seem to make a difference—absorbs more heat, so you’re already starting at a higher temp before you even hit it with the gun.

I’ve tried welding both early and late in the day, and honestly, I think it matters more than people admit. Early morning, you get maybe an hour or two where the membrane isn’t already hot to the touch. By mid-afternoon, especially on a big open roof, you’re fighting the material and the weather. I’ve seen temps on the surface hit 140°F easy, and that’s before you even start welding. At that point, your margin for error is basically gone.

What I’m curious about is whether anyone’s actually measured the surface temp right before welding? I started using an IR thermometer after ruining a few seams, and it was eye-opening. Sometimes what feels “warm” is already way too hot for a clean weld. I’ve even started dragging tarps over sections just to keep them shaded until I’m ready to work.

Anyone else run into issues with wind? Sometimes a breeze cools things off just enough that your settings are suddenly off again, especially with gray TPO. It’s like you need a different approach every hour depending on sun, wind, and clouds.

I still think gray TPO is less forgiving overall, but maybe there’s something I’m missing—different gun settings or speed? Or is it just about picking your battles with timing and weather?

I get what you’re saying about gray TPO being less forgiving, but I’m not totally convinced it’s just the color. I’ve had white TPO bubble up on me too if I’m not careful, especially when the sun’s blasting.

That’s spot on. For me, it’s more about checking the temp every time, no matter the color. I’ve found slowing down and dialing back the gun helps more than just picking a different time of day. Wind’s a pain, but honestly, I think technique matters more than weather half the time.

That’s been my experience too. I’ve seen guys get caught out because the surface temp was way higher than they thought, especially on a sunny day—even with white TPO. I always recommend using a temp probe right before welding, not just relying on feel. If you’re seeing bubbling, it’s usually a sign to slow down and maybe drop the gun temp a notch. Technique really does make all the difference, even more than the weather sometimes. I’ve watched folks get perfect seams in midday heat just by adjusting their pace and pressure.

I've definitely noticed that too. I tried to weld a patch last July and the seam looked fine at first, but a week later it started peeling. Turns out the TPO was over 140°F from the sun. Now I always check with an IR thermometer before starting. The gun setting alone isn't enough—surface temp swings a lot depending on where the sun's hitting.

I’ve run into this a few times on summer inspections. I’ve seen welds that looked textbook, but when I checked back after a rain or two, the seams had started to lift. Usually it’s spots that got direct afternoon sun—surface temp can be way higher than you’d guess just by feel. Ever tried welding early morning or late evening? I’ve found that helps, but sometimes schedules just don’t allow it. Curious if anyone’s actually measured how much difference a shaded area makes compared to full sun...
