Yeah, those micro-mesh covers are a bit of a mixed bag. I’ve seen them work great on houses with just oaks, but once you throw in pine needles or that sticky spring pollen, it’s game over. I always tell people—if you’ve got trees nearby, “maintenance-free” is just marketing. Dents from hail are annoying, but at least metal gutters can take a beating and still do their job. I’d rather have a few dings than be up there patching leaks after every storm.

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I’ve had more trouble with hail actually knocking the seams loose on my old aluminum gutters than just leaving dents. Maybe it’s a fluke, but after a couple big storms, I was up there re-securing brackets more than I’d like. Dings don’t bother me much either, but leaks from shifted sections are a pain. Guess it depends on how hard that hail comes down...

That’s interesting—I've actually seen a similar issue crop up during inspections, especially on older aluminum gutter systems. It’s not just the dents that are a concern, but the way hail can jostle those seams and brackets loose over time. In one case, after a particularly nasty storm, I found a whole section had shifted just enough to start leaking at the joint. The homeowner thought it was just cosmetic damage until water started pooling near the foundation.

I wonder if it’s partly down to how those older gutters were installed? Some of the older bracket systems just don’t have much give, so a direct hit from big hailstones can really knock things out of alignment. Newer seamless gutters seem to hold up a bit better, though they’re not immune either. It’s always a bit of a gamble with severe weather—sometimes you get away with a few dings, other times you’re up there with a ladder and sealant, cursing the sky...

I had no idea gutters could be so dramatic until I bought this place. After our first hailstorm, I thought the dings were just ugly, but then I noticed water trickling down the siding. Turns out, one of those old brackets had popped loose and the joint was basically a mini waterfall. I’m starting to think seamless gutters might be worth the upgrade, even if my wallet disagrees...

Man, I hear you on the wallet pain. I swapped to seamless a couple years back after patching joints every spring got old. Honestly, it’s been way less hassle since, but I did most of the install myself. Did you look into leaf guards too, or just focusing on the hail damage for now?
