is twice-a-year maintenance really worth the extra cost?

I've been going back and forth on this for a while now. Basically, the company that installed our HVAC system recommends getting it serviced twice a year—once before summer and once before winter. But my neighbor (who's pretty handy and has had his system forever) swears once a year is more than enough, especially if you change filters regularly and keep an eye on things yourself.

The thing is, the semi-annual service costs almost double what I'd pay for just one checkup, and I'm wondering if it's really necessary or just kind of a money grab. On the other hand, I don't wanna risk something major breaking down mid-season, because repairs are always crazy expensive when you're desperate (been there, done that...).

I guess what I'm asking is: does anyone actually notice a difference in reliability or efficiency by going with two services per year instead of just one? Or is it mostly peace-of-mind stuff? I'm leaning towards sticking to once annually, but if there's some solid reason for twice-a-year checks, I'd reconsider. Curious how others handle this kinda thing.

I've been in your shoes and debated this exact thing myself. When we first moved into our house, I went with the twice-a-year service because that's what the installer recommended. After a couple years, though, I started wondering if it was really worth it—especially since I was already changing filters regularly and keeping an eye on things.

So, I decided to experiment: one year, I skipped the spring checkup and just did the fall one before winter. Honestly, I didn't notice any difference in performance or efficiency. The system ran fine all summer, no hiccups or anything unusual. Since then, I've stuck with once-a-year maintenance (usually in the fall), and it's been smooth sailing for about five years now.

I think twice-a-year might make sense if your system is older or you're not comfortable checking things yourself. But if you're proactive about filters and basic upkeep, once annually seems plenty to me—at least based on my experience.
