cleaning gutters yourself vs hiring someone—worth the hassle or worth the cost?

So I was up on a ladder yesterday afternoon, gloves on, scooping out leaves and who knows what else from my gutters, and seriously questioning my life choices. 😅 I'm not exactly scared of heights, but balancing up there while trying not to spill that nasty sludge all over myself made me wonder if it's really worth saving a few bucks by doing it myself.

I mean, gutter cleaning isn't rocket science, right? You climb up, you scoop stuff out, you rinse it down with a hose... sounds simple enough. But somehow, every time I do this myself, it turns into a whole ordeal. Ladder placement is tricky (my yard is kinda uneven), then there's always that one stubborn clump of gunk that refuses to budge, and of course, the obligatory encounter with creepy crawlies. Last year I found a small family of spiders had set up camp—I nearly fell off the ladder in surprise. 😬

But then again, hiring someone isn't exactly cheap either. I've gotten quotes before and they always seem kinda steep for something I technically could do myself in an afternoon. Plus, I've heard mixed reviews about some companies—some friends swear by their gutter-cleaning service ("best money ever spent," they say), while others complain about sloppy jobs or workers leaving debris all over their landscaping.

So I'm curious how everyone else deals with this. Do you bite the bullet and pay someone to handle your gutters professionally? Or do you tough it out and DIY it like I did yesterday? I'd love to hear experiences either way—maybe it'll help me decide if next time I'll put away the ladder or my wallet...

Haha, totally feel you on this. I've been in the same boat (or should I say ladder?) more times than I'd like to admit. Every fall I tell myself, "this year I'll just hire someone," but then I see the quotes and think, "nah, I can handle it." And every year, halfway up the ladder with leaves stuck to my gloves and spiders glaring at me, I regret that decision.

Honestly, for me, it's come down to a bit of a compromise. I still do it myself most of the time, but I've invested in a few things that make it way less miserable—like a gutter cleaning attachment for my leaf blower. It's not perfect, but it gets rid of most of the gunk without me having to scoop it out by hand. Plus, less time on the ladder means less chance of me faceplanting into the bushes.

On the other hand, I did break down and hire a company once when we first moved into our current house. It had been vacant for a while, and those gutters were basically mini compost heaps by that point. The crew did a decent job overall—though they did leave some debris behind in my flowerbeds—but honestly, it was worth it just to skip that initial nightmare cleanup.

I guess what I'm saying is, don't beat yourself up about questioning your life choices mid-gutter-cleaning. We've all been there! If you do decide to keep DIY-ing it, maybe try out some tools or gadgets to make your life easier. Or if you end up hiring someone occasionally, just think of it as paying for peace of mind (and spider-avoidance). Either way, you're definitely not alone in this struggle...

I totally get the appeal of DIY-ing it, but honestly, after my first attempt at gutter cleaning, I decided it's just not worth it for me. Last spring, I figured I'd save some cash and tackle it myself—how hard could it be, right? Well...let's just say balancing on a wobbly ladder while scooping out slimy leaves wasn't exactly my idea of a relaxing weekend.

"halfway up the ladder with leaves stuck to my gloves and spiders glaring at me"

Haha, this was basically me—except add in a surprise bird's nest (thankfully empty!) that nearly made me topple backward. After that little adventure, I decided to bite the bullet and hire someone. Sure, it stung seeing the bill at first, but watching from the safety of solid ground with a cup of coffee in hand felt pretty priceless.

I guess it depends on your comfort level and patience for messy jobs. But for me personally, paying someone else once or twice a year is worth every penny if it means avoiding another near-death-by-ladder experience...

Haha, I feel your pain. I've done both, and honestly, after seeing firsthand the damage that clogged gutters can cause—think water seeping into your foundation or rotting fascia boards—I'm firmly in the "hire someone" camp these days. Sure, DIY saves money upfront, but factor in your time, sanity, and potential ER bill if you slip...it's a no-brainer for me.
