Figuring out if pricier shingles really last that much longer

Compare the installed-price difference with the realistic extra service life, not just the headline warranty. Material cost is only part of a reroof, so a relatively small upgrade cost can make sense if the architectural shingles are likely to postpone the next tear-off by several years.

- Get installed prices for both options, not just material prices.
- Estimate the likely service-life difference for the local climate and roof conditions.
- Divide the added cost by those extra years.
- Check whether wind or algae coverage requires specific installation details or becomes prorated.

Installation quality, flashing, and ventilation still matter a lot. In moderate conditions, a well-installed 3-tab roof may be the better budget choice; in frequent wind, hail, or damp shade, the upgraded ratings can carry more value.
