finally upgraded to architectural shingles and loving the new look
Just got our roof redone last week, and we went with those architectural shingles instead of the regular flat ones. Honestly, wasn't sure if it'd be worth the extra cost at first, but man, it looks so much better - like night and day difference. Gives the house a more upscale, textured look, you know? Curious if anyone else here switched over recently and noticed a big improvement in curb appeal or home value.

We went with a darker charcoal shade - thought it contrasted nicely with our siding. I spent way too long analyzing color samples in different lighting conditions (my wife thought I was nuts, haha), but honestly, it paid off. The roof looks sharp, and I've noticed less heat buildup in the attic during summer. Can't say neighbors have commented much, but hey, at least the squirrels seem impressed...
Interesting choice going darker and still noticing less heat buildup. Usually, lighter colors are recommended for reflecting sunlight and keeping things cooler. Makes me wonder if the architectural shingles themselves have better insulation or reflective properties compared to traditional ones?
I've been looking into green roofing options lately - like those cool roofs or even living roofs with plants. Seems like they could really cut down on energy costs and help with stormwater runoff. As for green roofing options...I've inspected a few homes with them, and they seem to hold up surprisingly well if installed properly. Saw one place about eight years old, still looked healthy and lush. Maintenance seems key, though - definitely a bit more involved than standard shingles. Still, pretty cool to see grass growing on a roof in the middle of suburbia...
