RE: Which holds up better over time: felt or synthetic underlayment?
I had no idea low slope would be such a pain until I bought this place. My inspector just kind of shrugged and said “keep an eye on it.” Fast forward to last spring - surprise, water in the attic. I swapped to synthetic ...
RE: WHEN TAX BREAKS COLLIDE: A TALE OF INCENTIVE LAYERING
That “roof pitch certificate” thing got me too - felt like I was on a scavenger hunt for paperwork nobody had ever heard of. I swear, every time I thought I had the right forms, someone else would pop up with a new “requ...
RE: Thinking about installing leaf filters - worth the hype or waste of cash?
I caved and put in micro-mesh guards last fall after my gutters basically turned into a compost bin. They do a solid job keeping out the big stuff, but yeah, pine needles just camp out on top like they own the place. I s...
RE: Roof checkups saved me big bucks - anyone else?
I keep hearing about those zinc and copper strips, but honestly, I’m not convinced they’re the magic bullet everyone hopes for. I slapped some copper up there last fall (mostly because my uncle swore by it), and if anyth...
RE: Roof Dramas: Shingles vs. Metal After Heavy Rain
I feel you on the metal roof noise thing - when we first moved into our place, I was all excited because the previous owners had just installed a shiny new metal roof. Thought it looked super sleek and modern, you know? ...
RE: Roofing near the ocean - did you know salt air eats metal?
When we bought our first place near the coast, I had no clue salt air was even a thing. Learned real quick though when our shiny new grill turned into a rusty mess in less than a year. Anyway, we had aluminum flashing pu...
RE: Figuring out roof support: choosing between rafters and trusses
Yeah, totally agree on the skylights. When we bought our first place, I was all excited about adding a couple skylights until we realized we had trusses... cue sad trombone. Had to scrap that idea pretty quick. Rafters d...
RE: roof vents and the mysterious midnight drip
Yep, ice dams are sneaky little devils. Had a similar issue last winter - spent weeks convinced we had a ghost haunting the attic with all that dripping noise at night. Climbed up there with a flashlight (and zero clue w...
RE: how hot is too hot when welding TPO roofing?
Interesting point about darker roofs holding heat longer, but honestly, I'm not totally convinced it makes a huge difference in seam quality. I mean, I'm no roofing expert - just a first-time homeowner who learned the ha...
RE: Roofing near the ocean - did you know salt air eats metal?
Haha, tell me about it...my parents' beach place had this metal roof that turned into a rusty mess in like 4 years flat. They switched to aluminum with some special coastal coating - holding up way better so far.
