RE: What roof documentation is worth paying for at renewal?
For comparing quotes, it may help to separate the one-time visit or setup charge from the inspection and documentation charge for each building or roof section. If several roofs can be covered in one visit, ask for the s...
RE: Why does cleaning up nail clippings always turn into a scavenger hunt?
That’s a pretty spot-on comparison with sawdust. I’ve done a lot of home inspections where folks swear they cleaned up every last bit after a project, but then you move a box or sweep behind something and - yep, there it...
RE: Lowered my insurance bill after a roof inspection - anyone else surprised?
Yeah, it’s wild how suspicious they get about anything outside the usual asphalt shingle. I’ve seen the same thing - folks put on a modern membrane or metal roof, and suddenly the insurance company wants a full dossier. ...
RE: Feeling good about my switch to composite tiles - worth it?
That’s pretty much what I see with composite - most of the time, it’s the cosmetic stuff that takes a beating, but the underlying structure holds up. I’ve inspected a few roofs after hail and, yeah, the dents look ugly b...
RE: Thinking about replacing my roof - are shingles really worth it?
Yeah, the crew really does make or break a shingle job. I’ve seen some pretty rough installs where the rows aren’t straight or nails are overdriven - stuff that’ll come back to bite you in a couple years. Granules in the...
RE: Swapping Out Roof Vent Boots With The Seasons - Worth The Hassle?
I hear you on that. I’ve seen folks spend way more trying to “future-proof” their vent boots, only to end up with the same issues - just delayed and pricier. Around here (Midwest), the freeze-thaw is brutal, and I’ve los...
RE: Would tile roofs survive a harsh winter up north?
I’ve actually seen a few synthetic slate roofs up here, and they’ve held up better than concrete tile in most cases. The lighter weight definitely helps with shifting and cracking. That said, some brands get brittle in e...
RE: Finally tackled that metal edging thing on my roof
That’s the truth. I see a lot of folks get frustrated when they do everything “by the book” and still end up with some peeling or rust creeping in after a couple of seasons. It’s tough to beat Mother Nature, especially o...
RE: finally found a roofing company that didn't rip me off
Refreshing to see someone else highlighting this. I can't tell you how many attics I've poked my head into only to find insulation jammed up against soffit vents or zero airflow. Homeowners often jump straight to the pri...
RE: Roof Dramas: Shingles vs. Metal After Heavy Rain
Yeah, metal roofs definitely have their quirks. I remember inspecting a house last year during a sudden downpour - felt like I was inside a popcorn machine. The homeowner joked about needing earplugs at night. But honest...
RE: is it just me or are roofs wearing out faster these days?
Yeah, I've noticed the same thing during inspections. Honestly, ventilation and attic insulation play a huge role too - seen plenty of roofs age prematurely just because the attic wasn't breathing right. Materials matter...
RE: How tricky is too tricky when fixing modern gadgets?
I get the frustration, manuals can be pretty cryptic sometimes. But honestly, I don't think it's always about simplifying - some gadgets are just inherently complex. Like your sprinkler controller getting fried by lightn...
