RE: Navigating local rules for adding a green roof: my step-by-step
I get what you’re saying about running water around every penetration and edge, but I’m not totally convinced it always catches the weird stuff. I mean, yeah, it’s definitely better than just eyeballing, but I’ve seen wa...
RE: Spotting wear and tear on used gear: my quick routine
Tagging taped-up tools is smart, but honestly, I’m still a bit wary of lending anything that’s been patched up, even if it looks fine. My routine’s pretty quick: first, I check for any flex in the handle - if it’s got ev...
RE: How often do you actually get your business roof checked?
Quarterly checks sound like overkill at first, but I get where you’re coming from - especially with flat roofs. I’ve seen water sneak in through spots you’d never expect, and by the time you notice the stain on the ceili...
RE: if you had to redo your roof tomorrow, what material would you pick?
I get what you’re saying about the hail noise - my uncle’s place has a metal roof and he swears it’s like living inside a drum set during storms. But I’ve also seen some of those newer metal panels with extra insulation ...
RE: Keeping rust at bay when you're near the ocean
I’ve noticed the same thing with stainless, especially near the coast. Even 316 grade can get those little tea stains if you don’t rinse it off now and then. Have you ever tried any of those clear protective sprays or wa...
RE: Keeping rust at bay when you're near the ocean
I get what you mean about powder-coated aluminum - definitely better than plain steel, but I’ve still seen it bubble up if there’s even a tiny scratch. I tried using marine-grade stainless on a gate once, thinking it’d b...
RE: Solar attic fan install was supposed to be easy... right?
Haha, insulation is always out to get us, isn't it? Next time, try wearing long sleeves and gloves - makes the battle slightly less miserable. Still itchy, but at least you won't feel personally attacked by fiberglass sh...
RE: How tricky is too tricky when fixing modern gadgets?
Ran into something similar recently with a cordless drill. Battery stopped holding charge, figured I'd just swap out the cells inside. Step one: pry off glued-on plastic casing without cracking it (good luck). Step two: ...
RE: Finally tackled that metal edging thing on my roof
I've seen neoprene washers help sometimes, but they're not always a silver bullet. Last summer I worked on a job where we tried them out - initially seemed great, compressed nicely and all - but after a harsh winter, som...
RE: Roof Dramas: Shingles vs. Metal After Heavy Rain
Haha, good analogy. But honestly, people tend to exaggerate the noise from metal roofs. If you're willing to put in a bit of extra effort, here's what usually works: first, make sure your attic insulation is solid - spra...
RE: Will new solar panels mess up my old roof?
Photos are definitely helpful, but honestly, don't rely on them alone. I learned this the hard way when my uncle decided to put solar panels on his 20-year-old roof. He took a ton of pictures beforehand, thinking he was ...
RE: best spot for ice barrier under shingles?
Ridge vents alone can work pretty well, but honestly, it depends on your attic setup and roof shape. If you've got a simple, straight roofline without a lot of complicated angles or dormers, ridge vents usually do the tr...
