RE: Quick Fixes for Cracked Shingles: Does Sealant Actually Help?
The reports of sealant peeling after a winter are a good reason to treat it as a short-term stopgap, not a repair. For future readers, it makes the most sense only for minor, accessible damage and with a roofing product ...
RE: When hail meets metal: a suburban legend
We just had a standing seam roof with hidden fasteners put on last year - Midwest, so hail is basically a spring tradition here. I was sold on the “no exposed screws = fewer leaks” pitch, but honestly, I think it’s only ...
RE: What should I consider when choosing top structure shed fabrication services and tarpaulin for industrial or outdoor use?
I get where you’re coming from - mixing stuff like gravel and tarps can sometimes backfire. When I set up my shed, I tried a double tarp layer with a slight slope toward one corner for drainage. It helped, but I had to w...
RE: How often do you actually get your business roof checked?
I totally get the “wait for the neighbor” thing - guilty here too. I usually just look for obvious stuff from the ground, like big branches or sagging gutters, but honestly, you can’t see much else unless you’re up there...
RE: When sparks fly: imagining a wildfire-proof neighborhood
I was in the same boat last year - didn’t want to drop a ton of cash on those fancy vent covers, but basic mesh felt like a gamble. Here’s what I ended up doing: I went with 1/8” stainless steel mesh from the hardware st...
RE: Keeping algae off Atlas shingles: My quick hack
Keeping algae off Atlas shingles: My quick hack I tried the spray too, and honestly, it’s not magic but it does buy you a few months of less scrubbing. Here’s what worked for me: I hit the worst spots first, let it sit,...
RE: When the leaves fight back: a suburban drain mystery
You’re not alone with those flex extensions - mine looked like a sad noodle after the first storm. I tried the brick trick too, and it just made a muddy mess. I think they’re all a bit flimsy, honestly. On the downspout...
RE: Anyone else tried those heated driveway mats?
I tried them this past winter and honestly, I was hoping for more. They worked okay for light snow, but if we got more than a few inches - or if the wind piled up drifts - they couldn’t keep up. I ended up using a shovel...
RE: WHEN TAX BREAKS COLLIDE: A TALE OF INCENTIVE LAYERING
I’ve got a folder labeled “tax chaos” for exactly this reason. First time I tried to claim the energy credit, they wanted a copy of the contractor’s business license from two years ago - like, who thinks to save that? My...
RE: Would You Pick Clay Tiles for Your Roof or Something Else?
Yeah, I hear you on the “but” with every roof type. I went with architectural shingles after seeing my neighbor’s clay tiles shatter in a hailstorm. Step one for me was just walking the neighborhood and seeing what actua...
