RE: Anyone have experience with shingles that hold up against hail?
Funny you mention the noise - I've installed a bunch of standing seam roofs, and honestly, most folks tell me it’s not as loud as they expected. If you’ve got a solid attic and insulation, it just sounds like regular rai...
RE: Weighing the pros and cons: full roof removal vs. just adding a new layer
That’s spot on - ventilation gets overlooked way too often. I remember tearing off a 30-year-old roof last summer, and the homeowner had no idea there were two layers up there. The attic was like a sauna, and mold had st...
RE: how hot is too hot when welding TPO roofing?
That’s been my experience too, especially with the white TPO. I’ve had the temp gun read 20-30 degrees cooler than what’s actually happening at the seam, just because the glare messes with it. On gray or tan, it seems a ...
RE: Figuring out roof support: choosing between rafters and trusses
You’re definitely not alone worrying about overloading trusses. I’ve seen more than a few folks get a little too ambitious with attic storage, only to end up with wavy ceilings or worse. Trusses are engineered for pretty...
RE: Roof upkeep through the seasons - did you see this?
Mesh definitely does a better job with water flow in heavy rain, at least from what I’ve seen on jobs. But yeah, pine needles are relentless - those things find their way into everything. I’ve tried the reverse curve sty...
RE: Roofing that stands up to wild weather - anyone tried this?
You nailed it about underlayment - synthetic’s a game changer, especially with Midwest storms. I’ve seen layovers last a good while if the decking’s solid, but I always tell folks to check for soft spots real close. Some...
RE: How tricky is too tricky when fixing modern gadgets?
Couldn't agree more. Reminds me of a homeowner I worked with last summer - great guy, pretty handy around the house. He bought one of those "easy-install" skylights and figured he'd save a few bucks doing it himself. Lon...
RE: telling apart fresh leaks from old ones is driving me nuts
Haha, beige paint hits way too close to home - spent half an afternoon last weekend squinting at "Sandstone" vs "Warm Biscuit," no joke. Anyway, blurry text is a good clue...but what about timestamps? Ever notice they're...
RE: can home inspections really lower my insurance bill?
Yeah, totally agree with this. I've seen customers get some decent savings after inspections, but it's definitely not a sure thing. Had one homeowner who upgraded to architectural shingles and hurricane straps thinking i...
