RE: Best way to lay deck boards on exposed trusses?
I’d definitely add some blocking or at least sleepers on top of those trusses - attaching deck boards straight to open web steel is asking for flex and squeaks, not to mention weird gaps. I learned the hard way that skip...
RE: How I dodged a payday loan disaster
Yeah, I hear you on the “protected” documents turning into mush. I’ve seen a lot of folks trust those budget safes, only to find out the hard way that “fireproof” doesn’t mean “waterproof.” It’s wild how many people don’...
RE: Why does every car brand have their own weird shade of red?
I’ve seen the same thing with cars parked outside versus those tucked away in garages or underground lots. Sun exposure just eats up certain colors, and red seems to take the worst of it. I had a cherry red pickup a few ...
RE: Getting attic airflow right: my step-by-step for better roof health
I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve seen the opposite too - folks skimp on insulation thinking more vents will solve everything, and then their energy bills go through the roof. It’s a balancing act for sure, but in...
RE: Battling winter roof woes: heat cables vs. more insulation?
Funny you mention soffit vents - I've crawled up into more than a few attics and found the same thing. Even one blocked vent can throw everything off. Curious if anyone’s tried those vent baffles or mesh screens to keep ...
RE: How I dodged a payday loan disaster
Yeah, video really does make a difference. I’ve seen adjusters change their tune once they see actual footage of shingles flying or water pouring in. Photos help, but video shows the whole story - especially if you catch...
RE: When hail meets metal: a suburban legend
Had a similar worry last spring - big hailstorm rolled through and I was convinced my metal guards were toast. Ended up with a few small dents, but nothing actually bent or broke. The rattling gets worse in high winds fo...
RE: How Often Do You Really Need to Service Your Stuff?
I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I’ve seen the “sniff test” miss stuff, especially after a big storm. Sometimes water sneaks in behind siding or under shingles and you won’t smell a thing until it’s way too ...
RE: Would You Pick Clay Tiles for Your Roof or Something Else?
Clay tiles look amazing, no doubt about it. But man, I’ve seen more than a few folks regret not thinking through the weight issue. One neighbor had to reinforce his whole roof after the fact - wasn’t cheap, and he was no...
RE: When the leaves fight back: a suburban drain mystery
That about sums it up. I’ve seen every type of guard in action, and honestly, nothing’s truly “set it and forget it” - especially with pines dropping needles like confetti. The reverse curve ones (the kind that make wate...
