RE: Would you worry about lightning if your house had a metal roof?
That’s a good way to put it. I get why you’re cautious - rural sites are a different beast, especially with rocky soil. Going above code makes sense if you can swing it. Better safe than sorry when storms roll in.
RE: Would you worry about lightning if your house had a metal roof?
I get the worry about lightning with metal roofs, but honestly, I’m more concerned about how much waste asphalt shingles create. Metal’s recyclable and lasts ages. Only thing I’d double-check is grounding - doesn’t hurt ...
RE: Would Malarkey shingles survive a solar-powered zombie apocalypse?
I hear you on craftsmanship over materials. I’ve seen “premium” shingles fail in under ten years just because the crew cut corners, but I’ve also seen basic three-tabs last ages with regular checks and touch-ups. Still, ...
RE: Anyone have experience with shingles that hold up against hail?
That’s been my experience too - insurance is quick to call anything “maintenance” if it’s not super obvious right after the storm. I started snapping pics after every hail event, just in case, but who knows if it’ll actu...
RE: Swapping Out Roof Vent Boots With The Seasons - Worth The Hassle?
Yeah, I’m with you there. I’m in a spot where we get those wild temp swings too, and honestly, my vent boots have only needed attention when the rubber started to get brittle - usually after a good decade. The sealant’s ...
RE: When the leaves fight back: a suburban drain mystery
That’s been my experience too - those pine needles are relentless, especially with the reverse-curve guards. I was convinced the pricier systems would be a set-it-and-forget-it thing, but after a couple of years under a ...
RE: Just got a roof inspection PDF that's straight outta sci-fi
I’ve been watching the synthetic shake trend too, and honestly, I’m still on the fence. They look great at first, but I’ve seen a few in my neighborhood that faded weirdly after just a few summers. The warranty thing cra...
RE: WHEN TAX BREAKS COLLIDE: A TALE OF INCENTIVE LAYERING
Stacking incentives is a total maze. I tried to combine a state solar rebate with the federal tax credit last year, and the paperwork nearly did me in. The state folks told me one thing, the IRS instructions said another...
RE: Keeping rust at bay when you're near the ocean
I hear you on the salt - my tools in the shed basically age in dog years. Tried those “rust-proof” sprays, but they just made everything greasy and didn’t really stop the orange creep. Anyone else notice stainless still ...
RE: Figuring out roof support: choosing between rafters and trusses
Hot roofs always make me a little nervous too, especially with our wild Midwest weather. I get the appeal - no venting, tighter envelope, maybe a bit more energy efficient. But man, if moisture sneaks in and you don’t ca...
RE: finally found an underlayment that lasts - what's your experience?
That’s a smart move with the ice and water shield in the valleys and eaves - those spots always seem to be the first troublemakers. I’ve noticed the same thing with felt just not holding up when it gets muggy, especially...
RE: how much does fixing up after a big storm usually set you back?
That’s the part that gets me - insurance calls it “cosmetic,” but if your roof looks trashed, it can hurt resale or just bug you every time you pull in the driveway. Has anyone here had luck getting those kinds of damage...
RE: when do you usually tackle gutter cleaning?
Funny how “maintenance-free” always ends up meaning “maintenance-lite” at best. I’m with you on the pine needles - they’re like little escape artists. I’ve tried a few different guard styles, but nothing’s totally foolpr...
RE: Roofing that stands up to wild weather - anyone tried this?
Totally agree - rock wool alone isn't foolproof. Curious if anyone's tried pairing it with a green roof setup? I've seen some impressive results with vegetation layers buffering extreme weather...might be worth exploring...
RE: LOOKING FOR GOOD PLACES TO BUY METAL ROOFING SHEETS
Gauge definitely matters, but honestly, I've seen coatings make a bigger difference long-term. Had a neighbor who went with thicker gauge sheets from a big box store, but skimped on coating quality - within a few years, ...
