RE: Roofers And The Mysterious Payment Schedule: A Story Prompt
That’s exactly it. I went through this last summer - magnet sweeper, gloves, the whole nine yards - and STILL managed to step on a nail a month later. I started raking the mulch aside and running the magnet over bare dir...
RE: Swapping Out Roof Vent Boots With The Seasons - Worth The Hassle?
I hear you on the price of those silicone boots - my wallet winced too when I looked them up. I ended up trying one of those metal retrofit sleeves last fall, mostly because I just couldn’t justify the cost of replacing ...
RE: Navigating local rules for adding a green roof: my step-by-step
That sums it up. I ran into something similar when I tried to get approval for my solar panels last year. I figured emailing PDFs would be quicker, but nope - the city wanted everything printed on their “approved” paper ...
RE: ROOF SURVIVED HURRICANE, BUT WAS IT JUST LUCK?
Couldn’t agree more. My roof’s about 18 years old, and after last year’s storm, I thought we dodged a bullet - no missing shingles, nothing obvious. But a few months later, I found water stains in the attic. Turns out so...
RE: Roofing that stands up to wild weather - anyone tried this?
I hear you on the Georgia sun - my asphalt shingles started curling after just eight years, and the warranty was basically useless. Looked at metal too, but the price tag made me wince, and my neighbor’s roof literally r...
RE: Thinking about replacing my roof - are shingles really worth it?
I totally get where you’re coming from. I went back and forth on this exact thing last year when my roof started looking rough. Metal sounded great at first - less maintenance, lasts forever, all that. But then I started...
RE: Finally tackled that metal edging thing on my roof
Good point about degreasing, but honestly, acetone can be a bit harsh and pricey if you're doing a larger area. I've had pretty solid results just using regular dish soap mixed with warm water to cut through grease and g...
RE: Just got a roof inspection PDF that's straight outta sci-fi
I've thought about DIY drone inspections myself, but honestly, after watching my neighbor nearly crash his drone into a chimney... I'd rather leave it to the pros. Might cost a bit more upfront, but cheaper than replacin...
RE: Is it true tile roofs are basically maintenance-free?
Tile roofs are definitely solid, but I wouldn't call them totally maintenance-free. Had mine about 10 years, and while they're way less hassle than shingles, you still gotta keep an eye out for moss buildup or debris get...
RE: insurance fine print strikes again - what would you do?
That's a smart move, honestly. I learned the hard way too - had a pipe burst last winter, and turns out my policy had quietly excluded water damage unless I paid extra. Sneaky doesn't even begin to cover it. Now I comb t...
RE: Best ways to insulate a modified bitumen roof?
Totally agree on the cover boards, they're underrated. When we redid ours, adding gypsum board underneath was a lifesaver - hailstorm hit last spring and neighbors had leaks everywhere, but ours held up fine. Worth every...
