I’ve seen folks try to swap a couple shingles, then realize half the sheathing is mush. If your screwdriver goes in like butter, you’re not patching—you’re rebuilding. Had a client step right through their porch roof once... surprise weekend project, for sure.
I get the urge to patch and go, but is it always necessary to rip everything out if you hit a soft spot? Sometimes, localized rot can be cut out and replaced without tearing up the whole deck. Curious if anyone’s had luck with partial sheathing repairs holding up long-term?
