WHEN DOES A "QUICK FIX" TURN INTO A WEEKEND PROJECT?

Guess it comes down to knowing when you’re buying time versus just kicking the can down the road.

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I’ve seen way too many “temporary” patches turn into long-term headaches. Even with something like EPDM tape, if water sneaks in under the patch, you might not notice until there’s rot or mold. Sometimes it’s just safer to carve out the time for a proper fix, even if it means a late night or a tarp for a few days. Quick fixes can be tempting, but roofs don’t usually forgive shortcuts.

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve patched a few leaks for folks who just wanted to “get through the season,” and a year later we’re tearing out half the decking because water found its way in. Sometimes a tarp and some patience really is the lesser evil. I get wanting to save time, but with roofs, those shortcuts usually come back to bite you... especially if you’re in a wet climate.

- "with roofs, those shortcuts usually come back to bite you..." — yeah, seen that play out more than once.
- Quick fixes might hold for a dry spell, but if you’re somewhere rainy or windy, water always finds the weak spot.
- I’ve tried patching with eco-membranes—sometimes they buy you a few months, sometimes not even that.
- Anyone here actually had luck with a longer-term patch? Or does it always turn into a bigger job than you planned?
- Curious if roof type matters—like, does metal handle quick fixes better than asphalt?

- Had a patch on my parents’ old asphalt roof last through one winter, but come spring, the leak was back and worse.
- Metal seems to shrug off quick repairs a bit better—at least, the seams don’t break down as fast, but if water gets under, it’s game over anyway.
- Sometimes I think it’s less about the material and more about how rushed the fix is... ever tried a “temporary” patch and left it too long?
- Curious if anyone’s had a patch actually outlast the rest of the roof. That ever happen, or is it just wishful thinking?

- Seen plenty of “temporary” patches turn into semi-permanent fixes, but honestly, most don’t outlast the roof itself.
- You’re right about rushed jobs—prep and sealing make all the difference, no matter the material.
- Had a client’s metal patch last almost a decade, but that was rare. Usually, it’s just buying time until a real repair.
- Don’t beat yourself up—those quick fixes are sometimes the only thing standing between you and a soaked living room.
