I'm looking at redoing my roof soon and I'm kinda stuck between two options: just adding another layer of shingles over the existing one or tearing everything off and starting fresh. I've heard mixed opinions from friends and neighbors. Some say layering saves a ton of money and time, plus it's totally fine as long as you don't already have multiple layers up there. Others insist that stripping it down to the plywood is the only way to really see what's going on underneathβlike hidden moisture damage or rot you wouldn't notice otherwise.
Honestly, I'm leaning towards stripping it all off because I get paranoid thinking about hidden problems lurking beneath the surface...you know, outta sight, outta mind isn't always a good thing when it comes to roofs, lol. But then again, if layering is allowed by code and saves a decent chunk of cash, maybe it's worth considering?
Curious what route you guys took and if you're happy with how it turned out.
