How do you keep your roof from splitting in extreme weather?

You’re definitely not alone - clean gutters help, but they’re just one piece of the puzzle. Upstate NY winters are brutal on shingles, especially along the ridge where things flex the most. I’ve seen splits even on newer roofs with good gutters. Attic ventilation could be a factor, for sure. If warm air’s getting trapped, it’ll speed up those freeze-thaw cracks. Sometimes it’s just the age of the shingles too... they don’t all hold up the same, even if you baby them.

Freeze-thaw cycles are rough up here, no doubt. I’ve inspected a lot of roofs in this area and honestly, even with perfect gutters and decent attic ventilation, splits still happen - especially on older or lower-quality shingles. Ventilation does matter though; if the attic’s running warm, you’ll get more ice damming and stress on the shingles. Sometimes people overlook insulation gaps or blocked soffits, too. I wouldn’t rule out a material defect either... some newer shingles just don’t seem to last like they should.
