SOLAR ROOF COSTS ARE DRIVING ME CRAZY
Discussion options
Been looking into getting a solar roof installed, but man, figuring out how to pay for it is a headache. Loans, leases, upfront payments...it's all kinda overwhelming. Anyone else feeling lost with all these financing choices?

The loan-versus-lease choice gets much clearer if you compare the **total lifetime cost**, not just the monthly payment. I’d put each option in a simple worksheet and include:
- Down payment, loan interest, and fees
- Lease payment escalators and the full contract term
- Inverter or other maintenance costs
- Tax credits or local incentives, if you qualify
- Any roof removal and reinstallation costs when the roof eventually needs replacing
- Whether the agreement could complicate selling the house or transferring the contract
For example, a lease with a low starting payment may cost more after annual escalators, while a loan can look expensive upfront but leave you with an owned system afterward. Also get the roof’s remaining life checked first. Installing panels on a roof that needs replacement soon can turn into paying twice for labor.
