Mounting solar panels: go with traditional flashing or try those newer deck-mounted seals?

I hear you on the peace of mind with traditional flashing—especially if you’re in a spot that gets hammered by rain or snow. Have you noticed any maintenance issues since you went that route, or has it been pretty much set-and-forget? I’m curious if the extra upfront work really pays off long-term.

I get the appeal of traditional flashing, but I’ve actually had a different experience with deck-mounted seals. On my last install (asphalt shingles, pretty steep pitch, Midwest weather), I went with the newer seals because I wanted to avoid cutting into the roof more than necessary. Three years in—no leaks, and honestly, less debris buildup around the mounts compared to my neighbor’s old-school flashing. Maintenance has been almost nothing so far. Maybe it’s luck or just a good install, but I’m starting to think the newer tech isn’t as risky as folks make it out to be...

I’m with you on that. I used those deck-mounted seals on my last project (also Midwest, but lower pitch), and it’s been drama-free. I was nervous about skipping flashing, but honestly, less hassle and no issues yet. Maybe the tech’s finally catching up.
