- Noticed the same thing with metal roofs—condensation’s a real issue, especially in colder climates.
-

“I had to add a vapor barrier and extra insulation in the attic after my first winter with metal.”

That’s pretty much what I’ve had to do on a few properties. Vapor barrier plus R-38 insulation seems to keep things under control, but I still get nervous during freeze/thaw cycles.

- One thing I’ve seen: even with good insulation, if the attic isn’t ventilated right, moisture finds a way in. Had a place last year where the ridge vent was blocked by snow for weeks—ended up with minor mold on the rafters. Not fun.

- Curious if anyone’s tried those powered attic fans with metal roofs? I’ve heard mixed things—some say they help, others say they just pull warm air out and make the condensation worse.

- Also, anyone dealing with ice damming under metal? I thought metal would solve that, but apparently not if the insulation/ventilation isn’t dialed in.

Yeah, I hear you on the condensation and ice damming—metal roofs aren’t the magic fix some folks think. I’ve had a couple buildings where even with solid insulation and a vapor barrier, if the vents get blocked by snow, you’re still fighting moisture. Those powered attic fans? Mixed bag in my experience. Sometimes they help, but I’ve also seen them pull too much warm air out and actually make things worse during cold snaps. Honestly, it’s a constant balancing act. You’re definitely not alone dealing with this stuff.

Ain’t that the truth. My wallet cries every spring when I go up there and see what winter’s done. Thought I was being clever with a metal roof—figured I’d never worry again. Joke’s on me. Still had to deal with condensation and some weird ice dams last year. Powered fans? Tried one, but it sucked so much heat out, my heating bill looked like a phone number. At this point, I’m convinced the only real solution is moving somewhere it never snows... but then I’d miss complaining about it.

- Metal roofs are great for longevity, but yeah, they’re not a magic fix.

“my heating bill looked like a phone number”
—been there. Ventilation’s always a trade-off in cold climates.
- Ice dams don’t care what you put up there if there’s heat loss. Insulation upgrades helped me more than fans ever did.
- Every spring, I brace for surprises too. At least you’re catching problems early—beats finding out after a leak.
- Complaining about winter is half the fun, right?

- Not sure I’d write off ventilation so quick—seen a lot of homes where adding ridge and soffit vents made a bigger difference than just piling on insulation.
- Metal roofs are solid, but if the attic’s not breathing right, you’ll still get ice dams and condensation.
- Had a client last year with a brand new metal roof, still got leaks from trapped moisture... insulation alone didn’t cut it for them.
- Sometimes it’s about finding the right combo, not just one fix. Every house seems to have its own quirks.
- Winter’s rough, but honestly, spring surprises keep me on my toes more than I’d like.
